He later joined Second City Northwest, showcasing his talent in sketch comedy.

His television career took off with brief appearances on iconic shows like Saturday Night Live and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Koechner also landed small roles in films, including Man on the Moon and Wag the Dog. It was during the production of the mockumentary Dill Scallion that he connected with Dave 'Gruber' Allen, leading to the creation of their successful act, The Naked Trucker & T-Bones Show, which gained popularity at venues like Largo and earned them a chance to open for Tenacious D.

Koechner's breakout performance as Champ Kind in the cult classic Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy opened doors to larger supporting roles in notable comedies such as Talladega Nights, Snakes on a Plane, and Thank You for Smoking.
