James Cromwell

James Oliver Cromwell, born on January 27, 1940, is a distinguished American actor renowned for his performances in both film and television. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Dr. Zefram Cochrane in "Star Trek: First Contact," and has delivered memorable performances in acclaimed films such as "Babe," "L.A. Confidential," and "Spider-Man 3." Over the course of his career, Cromwell has received numerous nominations, including an Academy Award, three Emmy Awards, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Originally hailing from Los Angeles, California, Cromwell was raised in Manhattan, New York. He was adopted by actress Kay Johnson and actor-director John Cromwell, who faced blacklisting during the McCarthy era. His educational journey took him through The Hill School, Middlebury College, and the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now known as Carnegie Mellon University), where he studied engineering. Despite his academic background, he was drawn to the theater, tackling diverse roles from Shakespearean classics to avant-garde productions.

Cromwell is also known for his strong advocacy for progressive causes. In a notable interview in October 2008, he criticized the Republican Party and the policies of the George W. Bush administration, expressing concern over their potential impact on global stability. A committed animal rights activist, he adopted a vegetarian lifestyle in 1974 and later became an ethical vegan, particularly influenced by his role in "Babe." Cromwell has been vocal in his support for PETA, focusing on issues related to animal welfare. He was married to Anne Ulvestad from 1976 to 1986 and later wed actress Julie Cobb on May 29, 1986.
