He received his early education at Felsted School in Essex and became a member of the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. Doherty honed his craft at the Guildford School of Acting, from which he graduated in 1989. He is married to TV presenter Joanna Sinnott, and the couple shares two children, Jago (born 2006) and Nell (born 2013).

Doherty has made a significant mark in the realm of television comedy, featuring in acclaimed series such as The Thick of It, Veep, Rev, Miranda, The Windsors, and the BAFTA-winning Him & Her - The Wedding.
