Jean-Claude Van Damme, born Jean-Claude Camille François van Varenberg on October 18, 1960, in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Brussels, Belgium, is renowned as “The Muscles from Brussels.” Encouraged by his father, Eugène, an accountant, he began martial arts training at the age of eleven to build his physical strength. By twelve, he was honing his skills at the Centre National De Karate under Master Claude Goetz, and within four years, he earned a position on the Belgium Karate Team. Van Damme's impressive teenage achievements included winning the European professional karate association's middleweight championship and defeating the second-best karate fighter globally.

At sixteen, he embarked on a martial arts fighting career, retiring in 1982 with a record of 18-1 in kickboxing and 41-4 in semi-contact. Seeking greater opportunities, he moved to Los Angeles in 1981, juggling various jobs while taking English classes. His breakthrough came when he caught the attention of Chuck Norris, leading to a minor role in “Missing in Action” (1984) and his first significant role as Ivan in “No Retreat, No Surrender” (1986).

His breakout film, “Bloodsport” (1988), despite initial setbacks, became a box office success, grossing $30 million worldwide. Following this, he starred in high-profile films such as “Cyborg” (1989), “Double Impact” (1991), and “Universal Soldier” (1992). Van Damme's major hit, “Timecop” (1994), grossed over $100 million. However, personal struggles led to a decline in his career during the late 1990s. After remarrying Gladys Portugues in 1999, he revitalized his career with films like “Replicant” (2001) and “Derailed” (2002), aiming for new heights.
