Growing up in Texas, Zellweger pursued a degree in English literature at the University of Texas at Austin. Initially interested in journalism, she found her passion for acting after performing on stage during her college years. Her early career included minor appearances in films like Dazed and Confused (1993) and Reality Bites (1994). Zellweger's breakout role came in the slasher flick Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994), but she gained widespread recognition with her performances in the romantic comedy Jerry Maguire (1996), the drama One True Thing (1998), and the dark comedy Nurse Betty (2000), the latter earning her a Golden Globe.
