In a shocking event during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on January 6, 1994, Nancy Kerrigan is attacked by an unknown assailant. The incident is soon uncovered to be the work of a hitman hired by the ex-husband of Kerrigan's competitor, Tonya Harding. This drastic move was part of a scheme to sabotage Kerrigan’s chances of competing in the upcoming 1994 Winter Olympics, setting off a scandal that would rock the figure skating world.
