Professor Payne encounters Elliot, the exceptionally bright son of an old flame. Upon learning that Elliot is nearly 10 years old, he begins to suspect he might be the child's father, a realization that infuriates his late wife. Meanwhile, Melinda, watching the interactions between Payne, Elliot, and herself, expresses her desire to start a family with Jim. Later, Melinda consults Carl, the detective she hired to locate her estranged father. As Carl stops by to share his findings, an unexpected incident unfolds during their conversation.
