The birth of Titus, heir to the 76th Earl of Groan, brings excitement to the castle. Meanwhile, Steerpike, a rebellious new kitchen boy, clashes with the cook, Swelter, and escapes. He unexpectedly enters the room of Lady Fuchsia, the Earl's daughter, who feels an unusual attraction towards him. She takes him to see the family physician, Dr. Prunesquallor. Gaining a position as Prunesquallor’s assistant elevates Steerpike's status, allowing him to manipulate the Earl’s twin sisters, Lady Cora and Lady Clarice. He incites them to burn down the castle library, unaware that the rest of the family is trapped inside.
