Steerpike emerges as the unexpected hero, saving the Groan family from the flames engulfing their library. In his despair over the destruction, Sepulchrave Groan spirals into madness, convinced he is an owl. His delusion leads to a tragic fate when the owls in the Tower turn on him. As a result, Titus ascends to the title of Earl of Groan. Meanwhile, Flay finds himself at odds with Lady Groan and is subsequently banished from the castle. He watches from a distance as Steerpike captures attention during the new Earl's coronation.
