Great British Railway Journeys (2010)
S13E3 Rye to Dungeness
Michael Portillo embarks on a journey guided by his 1930s Bradshaw’s handbook to the charming East Sussex port of Rye. There, he uncovers the tragic tale of lifeboatmen who perished in 1928 and visits a wartime pillbox. At Rye's shoreline, Michael delves into one of the 28,000 pillboxes built along Britain’s coast during World War II, learning from a military expert about the nation's preparations for a potential German invasion. Next, he hops aboard the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway to traverse Romney Marsh toward Dungeness, discovering the quirky story of the railway's creator, Count Louis Zborowski. From Dungeness, Michael travels to the former RAF site at Denge, where he encounters a series of massive concrete structures known as Sound Mirrors. An RSPB warden shares their fascinating history with him.
