S13E4 Deal to Margate
Starting his adventure at the historic port of Deal in Kent, Michael makes his way to the magnificent Walmer Castle, which served as the residence of Lord Beauchamp, the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports during the 1920s. Accompanied by a guide who established an LGBTQ working group for English Heritage, he learns about the extravagant parties Lord Beauchamp hosted, and how his openly extravagant lifestyle led to his exile when homosexuality was still a crime. Continuing along the east Kent coast, Michael visits the Royal Harbour of Ramsgate, reflecting on the bravery of the small vessels that rescued troops from Dunkirk in 1940. He explores a lengthy disused railway tunnel that once provided refuge from air raids, sheltering locals for years. Finally, Michael arrives in Margate, described by Bradshaw’s as a vibrant resort, a popular getaway for Londoners attracted by its innovative amusement park, Dreamland.
