Hal discovers that his father has died, but he shows no emotion and brushes it off, having never had a relationship with him. To prevent such feelings of loss in the future, he allows the boys to skip school and even offers to buy Malcolm a new car, until Lois intervenes. Seeing Hal's growing sadness, his friend Abe decides to lift his spirits and brings George Takei over for a visit, hoping to brighten his mood.
