Asuma’s team arrives at the bounty station and ambushes Hidan. Izumo and Kotetsu launch an attack, but despite striking his vital areas, they fail to take him down. Realizing the stakes, Asuma warns his teammates that retreating would lead to their deaths and put Konoha in jeopardy. Shikamaru discerns that Asuma is willing to sacrifice himself, drawing from his knowledge of Asuma's shogi tactics. Asuma engages Hidan directly, while Shikamaru keeps him occupied with Shadow Sewing techniques. Hidan manages to slice Asuma’s cheek and steps into a blood circle, but Asuma retaliates with a jutsu that envelops Hidan in ash, igniting it to seemingly eliminate him.
