Bobbie Jo falls for Alan Landman, a disillusioned poet and slacker who challenges her perspective on life. While she adores him, Alan dismisses her conventional lifestyle as trivial. Eager to prove him wrong, Bobbie Jo also grapples with her own doubts about the value of her choices. The rest of the family views Alan unfavorably, prompting Kate to devise a plan to help Bobbie Jo realize on her own that Alan's lifestyle may not be as glamorous as she believes.
