Uncle Joe brings up the idea of stock market investments, prompting Kate to remind him of a previous failed investment he had her make. Meanwhile, a leak in the hotel’s hot water heater necessitates a replacement. Joe proposes selling shares of the Shady Rest Hotel Corporation to finance the new heater. Sam offers to sell Kate a new one for $97.50, but she lacks the funds and is denied a loan from Pixley Bank. To help her out, Joe sells shares to Sam, Charley, and Floyd, knowing Kate wouldn’t accept money from them. Upset, Kate sees it as charity and devises a plan to teach Joe a lesson. Just then, Mr. Guerney from the bank arrives with some encouraging news for Kate.
