Edward has developed feelings for Elizabeth, a widowed noblewoman of lower rank, who approached him at a gathering. They secretly meet on numerous occasions, pretending their rendezvous are hunting trips. During one of these outings, Richard encounters Henry, a young shepherd he has met previously. Unaware of each other’s true identities, they find refuge from a rainstorm in a villa. “I don’t care who you are,” Henry says. “What matters is that I like you for who you are.” Richard remains silent, the rain pouring steadily throughout the night.
