Historically, Black television was largely influenced by white writers and creators, from Amos 'n' Andy to The Jeffersons and Good Times. However, the 1990s saw a surge of programming by Black creators, which highlighted social issues and transformed Black television into a cultural force. This era allowed shows like In Living Color and The Arsenio Hall Show to not just mirror Black culture, but actively shape it.
