Ruth reaches out to the members of a struggling community, inviting them to settle in Whitecross, even though they carry a contagious disease. When both Arthur and Jack fall ill, she begins to worry that her decision may have been a mistake. At the same time, Mark Carter (Ian Hastings), the unofficial leader of the newcomers, shares his insights with Charles about his farming practices and presents a new agricultural plan for him to consider.
