Charles, Jenny, and Hubert reach a settlement centered around an operational mill. This community is shaped by Frank Garner, a former personnel recruiter, and Rutna, a young Indian woman. They share a belief that humanity perished during 'the death' and must now be reborn into a new existence. Frank tries multiple times to have a private conversation with Charles, revealing his growing discomfort.
