While driving her cab, Elaine unexpectedly picks up Mary, an old high-school rival. Feeling embarrassed about her job compared to Mary's success running a top ad agency, Elaine fabricates a story about having a fantastic boyfriend who teaches at Columbia University. In the following days, Mary repeatedly calls, trying to set up a dinner with their boyfriends, but Elaine constantly comes up with excuses, anxious about her lie. Just as Elaine is about to confess, Alex grabs the phone, pretending to be her boyfriend and agrees to the dinner. At the restaurant, Alex charms everyone with his affectionate portrayal of their relationship, igniting jealousy in Mary and her boyfriend. Caught up in the ruse, Elaine finds herself captivated by Alex’s romantic performance.
