Nick starts working at the law firm of Walter and McNeil. Meanwhile, Lulu welcomes a baby girl and opts for a part-time position at legal services in Pittsburgh to care for her. Burton believes Nick’s decision to take the new job was a mistake. Alvin is determined to halt the execution of Taliek Allen after discovering new evidence indicating that his client sustained brain damage during an attack. Together with Nick, he aims to secure a trial that could save Taliek's life. Lulu chooses to have sole custody of their daughter and gives her her last name instead of Nick’s. This infuriates Alvin, especially after learning what Nick told his client about the chances of a clemency hearing. Nick eventually finds out that Burton has resigned from his firm to embrace his role as a grandfather, leading Nick to leave Walter and McNeil as well.
