As Basilone's fame rises, he crisscrosses the nation promoting war bonds. Meanwhile, on Pavuvu, Sledge, now part of the 5th Marines in the 1st Marine Division, enjoys a short reunion with Phillips, while Leckie returns to his unit. Soon, Sledge faces the brutal realities of warfare as he, Leckie, and their comrades in the 1st Marine Division encounter intense Japanese opposition during their landing on the heavily fortified and complex coral island of Peleliu.
