The Marines, now including the newly named “Sledgehammer,” persist in the fierce struggle for Peleliu, facing an adversary willing to fight until the end. Stricken by the death of a beloved commander and exposed to extreme brutality from both sides, Sledge grapples with the brink of moral disintegration. Once they achieve their goal, the Marines make their way back to Pavuvu, forever altered by the harrowing events they endured on Peleliu.
