Lucas McCain and his son Mark move to North Fork, New Mexico, eager to begin anew. They find a ranch that catches their eye and is up for sale. To secure the down payment, Lucas decides to participate in a Turkey Shoot. Meanwhile, Jim Lewis, the town’s influential figure, has placed his bets on Vernon, a young sharpshooter he has recruited. As rumors about Lucas's past in the Nations spread, Lewis grows uneasy and resorts to intimidation, putting Mark's safety in jeopardy to make life difficult for Lucas.
