Gamache finds himself in trouble with General Director Francoeur after he disregards orders and starts looking into the vanishing of Blue Two-Rivers. As a consequence, he is sent to the isolated village of Three Pines to probe the murder of a rich socialite, CC de Poitiers. Once there, he quickly realizes that things are far from straightforward, and a long list of potential suspects begins to emerge.
