Askeladd takes a brief step back from the conflict with England. In his quest for fresh revenue, he stumbles upon a clash involving the Franks and devises a scheme to pilfer their riches. He sends Thorfinn, now a 16-year-old hardened Viking, ahead to act as a messenger in his plan.
