Knut Hamsun, renowned as Norway's celebrated author, harbors a deep resentment towards the English, rooted in the suffering they inflicted during WWI. When German forces invade Norway on April 9, 1940, he views their presence as a safeguard against British oppression. Although he embraces national socialist ideals, Hamsun grapples with the brutal reality of their implementation, which results in the imprisonment and execution of fellow Norwegians. Meanwhile, his wife Marie shows her allegiance by traveling through Germany, symbolizing both her support for Knut and their complex political stance during the tumultuous war.
