1949
In the bustling backdrop of 1940s New York, writer Joe Mitchell encounters the eccentric Joe Gould, a fixture in Greenwich Village. Gould, who survives on the kindness of others, is consumed by his ambitious project, the "Oral History of the World," which collects snippets of conversations he’s eavesdropped on. Captivated by Gould, Mitchell pens an article in 1942 that elevates Gould’s status, granting him entry to the local poetry scene. Despite their fractious relationship and Gould's frequent, unwelcome visits, a bond forms that endures until Gould's passing, culminating in a poignant revelation from Mitchell.
