Plot

Mother Carey, a widowed Bostonian, relocates to a dilapidated house in Maine with her three children. With the help of the local postmaster, Osh Popham, they settle in and begin to revive their new home. Although the house belongs to the enigmatic Mr. Hamilton, currently abroad in Europe, Osh reassures them of their temporary residency. As the children embark on delightful escapades alongside a visiting cousin, their summer takes an intriguing turn with the arrival of an unforeseen guest, adding a twist to their idyllic life in Maine.
