Mahree Bok, a young girl from a South African farm, is thrilled by her father's excitement over the arrest of activist Steve Biko. Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., Piper Dellums, the daughter of a congressman, enjoys a privileged life. Their worlds collide when Mahree is invited to spend a semester with the Dellums family, leading to unexpected revelations. Both girls are taken aback when they realize their assumptions about each other’s backgrounds are wrong—Piper’s family is black, while Mahree is not a black South African. Their friendship challenges preconceived notions and highlights the complexities of race.
