Plot

Amid the turmoil of World War II, Colvis Nevels, a struggling farmer, departs his quiet Kentucky farm for a factory job in Detroit. His devoted wife, Gertie, a skilled woodcarver bound by tradition, reluctantly joins him. As city life proves challenging and Colvis' careless spending plunges them into financial trouble, Gertie takes matters into her own hands. She launches a venture crafting exquisite hand-carved dolls, determined to support her family and navigate the difficulties of their new life.
